Installing and Configuring the ownCloud Client

The ownCloud client will allow you to synchronize your documents and multimedia files on your different devices, and / or work locally on your documents hosted in the cloud.

  1. Installation
  2. Configuration
  3. Using Synchronization
  4. Partial synchronization

1. Installation

  • Rendez-vous on the Customer Download Page (Part "Sync") to get the versions Windows, OSX, Linux, iOS and Android.
  • For Linux, the client is present in the repositories. However, to have the latest version stable and to have access to the automatic updates (recommended), it is necessary to add a PPA. All the details are on this page.
  • The ownCloud version used by Zaclys is currently the 8
In the meantime,
2. Configuration

  • Enter your username and password. You can obtain your username and enter a password by following this link: How do I open an account and know my credentials?
  • You can choose to synchronize all of your Cloud account content, or only a part. You can also choose the local directory where the synchronization will take place.

  • If everything happens, you'll get a message that your account is synced.
  • You can then click on "Open local directory" (to access the "owncloud" folder locally) or "open ownCloud in the browser" (to access the web interface).

3. Using synchronization

  • A "ownCloud" directory has just been created in your home directory. You can also find this directory by right-clicking on the client icon (in the notifications at the bottom right) and clicking on "Open the ownCloud folder".
  • Renew the client installation operation on your second device (PC, netbook, tablet, smartphone).
  • From now on, everything you do (adding, modifying, deleting a file) in the ownCloud directory of a device will also be in the ownCloud directory of the second. No need for a USB stick or network drive to recover or transport your data.

4. Partial synchronization

Here are various examples of using the synchronization client, with which synchronization is only partial.

  • You want to work locally on your files, but outside of your home, access via the web interface is sufficient.
  • Just like during the configuration of the client, click on "Choose the content to synchronize" to synchronize, for example, only your music directory. You can choose precisely which data you want to synchronize. Convenient if you want to share your music on your different devices, but not your photos and videos.
  • You can alsoAdd a folder to sync wherever it is on your hard drive. Click on "Add Folder". This is a solution if you do not want to sync in normal time, but only occasionally you need it for a particular folder.

  • by Bill (Zaclynaute) - 31/12/2015 08:34
